Authors: Copyediting vs Proofreading

A simple way to remember the difference between these two functions is to remember copyediting is “still editing” but proofreading is “the last glance”. Copyediting checks that every element of your story is consistent and complete. This is after a comprehensive edit and before proofreading. Proofreading is the last look before publication to catch any remaining typos.

Copyediting

  • Errors in grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation
  • Consistency of use: British English vs American English or, for example, e-mail vs email
  • Continuity problems
  • Basic fact checks
  • Legal liability checks
  • Story inconsistency
  • Structure

Proofreading

  • Errors in spelling, punctuation
  • Consistency of use
  • Awkward word or page breaks
  • Text or formatting errors
  • Page numbering
  • The Last Look!
